Between the Christmas Services

Students are welcome to bring a snack on Friday, December 18 to eat between services. White soda will be provided. Some fruit or a salty or sweet snack might be just right.  If there are any parents interested in providing additional snacks for the whole class, please bring them to the classroom between services.

Class Christmas Party

Our class will be having a small party on the afternoon of Thursday, December 17. Please email me at wscharf@stjacobi.org to let me know if you will be able to provide refreshments or supplies (e.g. paper products, etc) to send along with your child for this party.  We will also need a couple of parent helpers for the party.  Please let me know if you are interested.

November Book It! Results

We had 80% of our fifth grade students complete the 325 minutes of reading for November! As much as we know about the continued practice of reading and how it improves our vocabulary, imagination, general knowledge, and over-all intelligence, why are we not at 100%? Parents, do you want your child to do better in school, learn more, and get more out of reading? Just encourage MORE reading! Let's get 100% for December!

Sunday's singing

You did a nice job in church yesterday. Thanks for all your hard work, and for using your talents to praise your Lord. Thanks to all the parents who got the kids up early and to church on time.

Singing in Church

Hey fifth graders, you are in luck! Mr. Scharf has given me permission to post here.

We sing for the 8:15 service this Sunday, December 6. Because Mr. Frisque is accompanying us, we will be meeting in the fifth grade classroom to warm up at 7:50 am. I apologize for the early start time, but since Mr. Frisque is also the organist, he needs to get to church to start preservice music. We also need to be sure that our rhythm instrument players are ready to go. If you are unable to be there, please give a note to Mr. Scharf by Friday.

Christmas Gifts for Others Instead of Exchanging Names

In Acts 20:35, St. Paul reminds us that “we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”

Traditionally each year at Christmas students exchange names and buy gifts for one another. We will not be following that practice this year, but instead we are going to think of those who have real needs. Our children have so many things to be thankful for, blessings too numerous to count. To help them recognize how blessed they are and demonstrate our love for our Savior this year the class will take a collection for the St. Jacobi Almoners’ Fund. These gifts are used to help both St. Jacobi members as well as those in need from the community who request help with food, fuel, and the like. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to show Christian love to others during a difficult time in their lives. Your gifts can be brought to school any time through December 16. If you’d like to participate in this collection, your gift should be placed into a sealed envelope clearly labeled “Grade 5 Christmas Collection”.

Our collection goal is $125. With your help, we can reach this goal quite easily.

Thank you so very much for supporting the things we do here in your home. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Growing Up & Hygiene Presentations

This month our fifth and sixth graders will be learning about physical and emotional maturation during puberty. The program will be presented on Thursday, November 12 . Growing Boys (presented to boys) will be held from 12 to 1 PM, and Growing Girls (presented to girls) is scheduled for 1 -2 PM. Both of these will take place in our multipurpose room. The topics covered will be the anatomy of the reproductive system and changes during puberty, hygiene, and the need for communication with helpful adults.

A trained health educator from Children’s Health Education Center (CHEC), a member of the Children’s Hospital and Health System, will be coming to our school to teach the program. After the completion of the program, your child should be able to:
  • Identify a helpful adult to turn to with questions.
  • Understand that the changes of puberty are normal and healthy.
  • Understand reproductive anatomy (male and female) and its functions.

To find out more about CHEC, visit their web site at www.bluekids.org. CHEC also has a copy of the curriculum. If you would like to speak with a health educator to discuss the content of the program, please call 414-765-9355.

This note is simply a reminder of our school’s role in assisting you in your God-given responsibilities and privileges in raising your child. We have no intention of replacing your one-on-one interaction with your child regarding any of these topics, but this may be a prime opportunity for you to further discuss these items at home.

We feel human growth and development instruction is an important part of your child’s education. This is not a permission slip. However, if you do NOT want your child to participate in the program, please notify us in writing as soon as possible.

We’ve also made arrangements for Mrs. Jean Morzy to present information on personal hygiene to students. Specific topics include hand washing, along with skin, hair, and dental care. This will take place opposite the CHEC presentations from 12 – 2 PM in the sixth grade classroom.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Bring Your Fifth Grader to PT Conferences

Time to sign up for parent-teacher conferences already! Parents, as you consider scheduling a time to meet with me, please choose a time when your fifth grade child will be able to attend our conference. I consider these as parent-teacher-student conferences. I would strongly urge you to bring your fifth grade child along. Having your child attend our conference will better enable you, me, and your child a chance to discuss issues from each of our unique perspectives. We are also better able to discuss not only academic performance, but also behavioral issues, social growth, and organizational skills.

Thank you so much for your continued support and cooperation.

Social Studies Ch 3 Test Coming on Monday, Nov 2

So you're probably wondering why would he keep postponing that social studies test? Mr. B says to just get it done! I am sorry! I know many students have been preparing lots already. The reason is this: we haven't yet finished the chapter. The new social studies materials are wonderful, but I'm finding out that when my materials say an activity should take 45 minutes, I need to double that! I am confident chapter 4 will be better...I just won't announce the test until the day before! (Just kidding!) Hang in there, keep rehearsing for the test, and those diligent students will do very well!

Standardized Tests This Week!

We begin our Terra Nova standardized tests on Monday. It is important that your child not miss school if at all possible during testing time.

We conduct these tests for several reasons. Through these tests, we hope to see how your child and groups of children compare with other children in their grades in other WELS schools as well as other public and private schools across the nation. These tests can also help teachers and school leaders assess our curriculum.

There are several things you can do to ready your child:
  • Help your child relax. These tests are not graded. There is no way to study for them.
  • Make sure your child has a good night’s sleep.
  • Make sure that your child eats a good breakfast each morning.
The rest is up to your child. I will encourage your child to do the best that s/he can with the gifts and abilities that God has given her/him. I'm including a tentative schedule for the week. Click on it for a larger view. If you have any questions, please email or call.

Social Studies Internet Tutorials

Fifth grade students now have an opportunity to assess their own learning by completing Internet tutorials that correlate to our text, Social Studies Alive! America's Past. To access the tutorials, click here. You may want to bookmark this site in order to refer to it for each chapter. Keep track of the number of answers you get correct on your first try. If you are having difficulty answering questions, you should review your notes and try again. Rereading the chapter is also a great idea.

Please plan on sharing things that are somewhat healthful, like fruit, veggies and dip, cheese and crackers, and non-pop (non-soda) beverages.

Welcome Back to School!

Fifth graders, I hope you stayed warm during our very cold days off!

Missing two school days just before our second quarter's end may have given students some extra time to complete missing work. To see if you have missing work, you've been told all quarter to be checking your PowerSchool account. All Q2 work must be turned in no later than Tuesday morning when you arrive. I have to finalized all grades on Wednesday afternoon, and I need some time to review work that you will be turning in. Report cards are scheduled to be sent home on Monday, Jan. 26.

In case you are wondering about some of those assignments that were due during our time off, we will be working them into this week lessons and counting them for our third quarter. Here are some specifics:

Pizza Lunch on Monday

Mr. Otto, AJ's dad, is providing a pizza lunch for fifth grades students. They are welcome to have pizza, bring their lunch from home, order a hot lunch, or enjoy a combination of these. Students were informed of these options and were able to select the kind of pizza they prefer.

Fifth Graders Give Over $300

Saint Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 9:7, "God loves a cheerful giver." Fifth graders and their families were certainly cheerful as they gave over $300 to the St. Jacobi Almoner's Fund. What an excellent way to display your love for Jesus because of what He’s done for you! Traditionally each year at Christmas students exchange names and buy a gift for one another. Students did not follow that practice this year, but instead considered those who have real needs. These gifts are used to help both St. Jacobi members as well as those in need from the community who request help with food, fuel, and the like.
