Singing in Church
We sing for the 8:15 service this Sunday, December 6. Because Mr. Frisque is accompanying us, we will be meeting in the fifth grade classroom to warm up at 7:50 am. I apologize for the early start time, but since Mr. Frisque is also the organist, he needs to get to church to start preservice music. We also need to be sure that our rhythm instrument players are ready to go. If you are unable to be there, please give a note to Mr. Scharf by Friday.

Christmas Gifts for Others Instead of Exchanging Names
Traditionally each year at Christmas students exchange names and buy gifts for one another. We will not be following that practice this year, but instead we are going to think of those who have real needs. Our children have so many things to be thankful for, blessings too numerous to count. To help them recognize how blessed they are and demonstrate our love for our Savior this year the class will take a collection for the St. Jacobi Almoners’ Fund. These gifts are used to help both St. Jacobi members as well as those in need from the community who request help with food, fuel, and the like. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to show Christian love to others during a difficult time in their lives. Your gifts can be brought to school any time through December 16. If you’d like to participate in this collection, your gift should be placed into a sealed envelope clearly labeled “Grade 5 Christmas Collection”.
Our collection goal is $125. With your help, we can reach this goal quite easily.
Thank you so very much for supporting the things we do here in your home. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Growing Up & Hygiene Presentations
A trained health educator from Children’s Health Education Center (CHEC), a member of the Children’s Hospital and Health System, will be coming to our school to teach the program. After the completion of the program, your child should be able to:
- Identify a helpful adult to turn to with questions.
- Understand that the changes of puberty are normal and healthy.
- Understand reproductive anatomy (male and female) and its functions.
To find out more about CHEC, visit their web site at www.bluekids.org. CHEC also has a copy of the curriculum. If you would like to speak with a health educator to discuss the content of the program, please call 414-765-9355.
This note is simply a reminder of our school’s role in assisting you in your God-given responsibilities and privileges in raising your child. We have no intention of replacing your one-on-one interaction with your child regarding any of these topics, but this may be a prime opportunity for you to further discuss these items at home.
We feel human growth and development instruction is an important part of your child’s education. This is not a permission slip. However, if you do NOT want your child to participate in the program, please notify us in writing as soon as possible.
We’ve also made arrangements for Mrs. Jean Morzy to present information on personal hygiene to students. Specific topics include hand washing, along with skin, hair, and dental care. This will take place opposite the CHEC presentations from 12 – 2 PM in the sixth grade classroom.
Please contact me if you have any questions.

Standardized Tests This Week!
We begin our Terra Nova standardized tests on Monday. It is important that your child not miss school if at all possible during testing time.
We conduct these tests for several reasons. Through these tests, we hope to see how your child and groups of children compare with other children in their grades in other WELS schools as well as other public and private schools across the nation. These tests can also help teachers and school leaders assess our curriculum.
There are several things you can do to ready your child:
- Help your child relax. These tests are not graded. There is no way to study for them.
- Make sure your child has a good night’s sleep.
- Make sure that your child eats a good breakfast each morning.

Indian Summer Festival Field Trip
Itinerary for our trip:
9:30 AM Board a charter bus @ St. Jacobi
10:00 AM Arrive at the festival grounds (H. Maier Festival Park)
- Chaperons direct each group of students through the self-guided open-air cultural festival, staying together at all times. Eat lunch and take breaks at the direction of the chaperons. Groups are welcome to merge into a larger group at the chaperons’ discretion.
- Come prepared for a variety of varying weather conditions.
- Students are responsible for their behavior
- Chaperons are responsible for our students’ safety and to guide them in pursuit of educational experiences. Playground areas are off-limits.
- Plan on purchasing your lunch on the grounds. Bring at least $3. Menu items include traditional Native American foods, like Indian tacos, frybread, and corn soup. Typical modern foods should also be available.
- Students will have “Quest Cards” which are designed as a learning tool. When students visit designated areas, volunteers will stamp the cards. The goal for students is to receive at least 6 stamps on the cards. When completed, students should leave the bottom portion of the card with the volunteers. Quest Cards will be available from Mr. Scharf after we check in.
- All students and chaperons are required to wear armbands to enter the grounds. These will be distributed at check in.
- This is an educational school trip. It is also a privilege. All school rules are in effect and will be enforced. Students who misbehave will not join the class on future field trips. At the same time, this trip is meant to for students to learn in a less structured environment. Plan for a fun and exciting day!
- Student groups will be formed this week and will be available to chaperons on Friday morning.
- Chaperon list: L. Burke, C. Spaude, B. VanGrinsven, B. Grube, E. Krutz, L. Hopp, V. Brandenburg, D. Barnharst, M. Bertram, J. Emmrich, B. Rohleder, L. LeVack, E. Dziekan, C. Bailey, J. Martinez

School Orientation
St. Jacobi's Home Visit program has undergoing some changes for this coming school year. Many of our teachers are conducting small group orientation meetings at school in place of home visits to economize on time and mileage. Note the schedule to see what your students' teachers are doing. Please contact your child's teacher to schedule one of the offered times, especially if you have a specific preference for one of the dates listed. (Best to email me at wscharf@stjacobi.org). If your student's teacher is doing traditional visits at your home, they will contact you for an agreeable time to do the visit. Thanks for your help in making this program successful.

You can still publish a Voki character for credit by this Friday, Feb. 13. To make a Voki comment appear with my Voki, click the bottom right tab as shown in the picture.
Here's an additional opportunity for Social Studies bonus: Draw and color a poster summarizing any one of the first ten amendments (Bill of Rights). Include hand drawn pictures showing what the amendment protects. This one is due Thursday, Feb. 12.

Welcome Back to School!
Missing two school days just before our second quarter's end may have given students some extra time to complete missing work. To see if you have missing work, you've been told all quarter to be checking your PowerSchool account. All Q2 work must be turned in no later than Tuesday morning when you arrive. I have to finalized all grades on Wednesday afternoon, and I need some time to review work that you will be turning in. Report cards are scheduled to be sent home on Monday, Jan. 26.
In case you are wondering about some of those assignments that were due during our time off, we will be working them into this week lessons and counting them for our third quarter. Here are some specifics:
- Hymn 491 v 1-3 is now due on Friday, Jan. 23.
- Christ Light Sheet L2.6B is now due on Wednesday, Jan. 21.
- Spelling Unit 19 is due on Monday, Jan. 19. We will take the U19 final test on Monday as well.
- English Un2Gr5 Test is due on Tuesday, Jan. 20.
- Science Lab worksheet P27-28 is due on Wednesday, Jan. 21 (Many students turned the sheet in already, but will get it back and will need to explain their answers in greater detail.)
